My name is Michelle Taylor-Knight and I am a costume, prop and set designer.
I make bespoke stage and personal props, costumes and design stage sets.
With a Fine Art Degree and a background in tattooing, I call on a wide range of styles and references to find unique angles on briefs.
I am used to working in large and small theatres, as well as on site specific productions. I work with all performance groups from professional companies through to youth and community projects.
I enjoy working with creative teams and producing impactful, workable items to budget.

Der Vampyr.
Der Vampyr was the first opera produced by The Gothic Opera Company. Running over the Halloween weekend 2019 in The Old Church in Stoke Newington and The Asylum Chapel in Peckham. I was the make up artist for the show. This opera has now been nominated in the Opera Category of the Off West End Awards.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
2019. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was run by The White Rock Theatre's Summer Youth Project. 90 children, aged 7-18 years old, had two weeks to rehearse and produce a four show run of this iconic musical. I worked with the creative team, deciding on the look of the show, incorporating the well known costumes, updating some and making sure that the look of the whole cast was cohesive and relevant. I produced and sourced all of the personal props as well as all costumes, to a very strict budget.
Bloom Britannia
2019 Bloom Britannia is a new opera, written for the town of Hastings and its inhabitants. Involving professional opera singers, community choirs and schoolchildren, it was a lively, ever evolving piece. The staging was basic and naturalistic, using existing features of the De La Warr Pavilion, where it was shown in the round. I sourced and created an enormous amount of unusual props and worked closely with the local choirs on their outfits, which were co-ordinated from their own wardrobes.
The Anniversary
2017. The Anniversary ran at both The Stables Theatre and The Barn in Tenterden. Myself and Sam Taylor-Knight directed, designed and built the set, sourced and made all props and costumes. Having the experience of directing was invaluable, as it gave me insight into the pressures, restraints and scope of a performance when you are largely in charge!
God of Carnage
2016. God of Carnage was made with theatre company, George Lasso the Moon. It ran in three theatres and had a cast of 6. I was responsible for the stage concept and then the sourcing and production of all set items, costumes and props.
Alice in Wonderland.
2013. The first time I worked with The Stables Theatre. I made all costumes and personal props, which amounted to eighty-six largely unique costumes. Animal heads, tons of kings and queens and a new spin on the Mad March Hare and the Mad Hatter. I won the Stables Award that year, for the best costumes.
